Hip Pain Relief Through Physiotherapy

The hip is a complex, major weight-bearing joint connected to the spine, pelvis, and leg. Hip pain may be in the front, side, or back of the hip. It may have come on suddenly or progressively worsened over time and can be caused by a variety of structures. Injury to the muscles or tendons around the hip (tendonitis) can be caused by repetitive activity such as running, dancing or sports. Hip bursitis is caused by inflammation of the fluid-filled sacs (bursae) that cushion the hip joint and can cause pain on the outer hip. The labrum is cartilage that lines the hip socket. A tear can cause deep groin pain, clicking, or stiffness. Osteoarthritis can cause gradual hip pain, stiffness, and reduced mobility especially with weight-bearing activities. Hip impingement occurs when anatomically abnormal bone shapes pinch tissues in the hip joint, causing pain in the groin or front hip. Finally, irritation of nerves in the lower back or pelvis can refer pain to the hip often described as burning, tingling, or radiating pain.

How Physiotherapy Helps Hip Pain

Physiotherapy can be very effective for hip pain because it focuses on reducing pain, improving movement, and strengthening the muscles that support the hip.

Reduces Pain and Inflammation

Hands-on techniques (manual therapy, massage, soft tissue release) and targeted stretches help calm irritated muscles, tendons, or bursae.

Restores Mobility and Flexibility

Hip stiffness from arthritis, labral tears, or overuse can make walking or bending painful. Gentle stretching and joint mobilizations help restore hip range of motion.

Strengthens Key Muscles

Weak glutes, hip abductors, or core muscles can overload the hip joint and cause pain. Physio uses targeted exercises to improve strength and stability, reducing stress on the hip.

Improves Movement Patterns and Posture

Abnormal gait, sitting posture, or sports techniques can contribute to hip pain. A physiotherapist assesses your movement and retrains proper mechanics to reduce strain.

Gradual Return to Activity

After injury or surgery, physio helps you safely regain walking, running, or sports activity without flaring up pain.

Prevents recurrence

You’ll get a personalized home exercise plan and advice on footwear, activity modifications, and posture to keep your hips healthy long-term.
