Frequently Asked Questions

What injuries from motor vehicle accidents can be treated through physiotherapy?

Any injury to a muscle, bone, joint, tendon, nerve or ligament that occurs as a result of a MVA can be treated by physiotherapy. Additionally, headaches and TMJ pain from an accident will be treated.

How does physiotherapy help patients recover after motor vehicle accidents?

Often after a car accident the body is tight and stiff. The muscles surrounding the neck and back joints have engaged maximally to protect your spine in a situation of whiplash. Physiotherapy helps to release these muscles and build strength and stability so the tension doesn’t return. Hands on muscle and joint techniques combined with exercise, clinical Pilates and needling if appropriate are very effective for resolving MVA injuries.

What should I expect during my first physiotherapy visit after motor vehicle accidents?

Your first visit will include a thorough subjective history where we collect information about the injuries, your lifestyle, relevant past medical history and your personal goals. The second part is an objective examination where the physio will assess mobility and strength and perform movement tests to determine what has been injured. The first visit will also include treatment and you will be sent home with a couple things you can do or think about to keep progressing between visits.

Are physiotherapy treatment plans personalized for injuries caused by motor vehicle accidents?

Yes, of course. No two clients present the same so our treatment plans are always individualized.

How soon should I start physiotherapy after experiencing motor vehicle accidents?

Unless you have major injuries that require hospitalization, we can see you within the first week of the accident. Usually the sooner the better so we can begin to manage pain and inflammation.
